چکیده

The reorientation of the director of a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid-crystal film subjected to ultrasound pulses is discussed. The relationship is investigated for the first time, to our knowledge, between the transmitted optical power and the high-frequency (approximately megahertz) pulsed ultrasound intensity. It is evident that there exists a power law governing the ultrasound-intensity-dependent optical transmission. However, the data indicate no existence of a characteristic threshold for the acousto-optical effect. Our results suggest that acoustic streaming, known to be responsible for acousto-optical effects in cw ultrasound experiments, should also play a similarly important role in the case involving a pulsed ultrasound field.

Observation of domain patterns induced by ultrasound pulses in a nematic liquid-crystal film.

The homeotropically aligned nematic liquid-crystal layer with a free circular edge is studied. Domain patterns induced by high-frequency ultrasound pulses are observed for the first time to our knowledge. The pattern changes for different incident angles of the ultrasound and can be enhanced by a quasi-static electric field.

Tailoring ultrasonic beams with optoacoustic holography

A combination of laser-induced ultrasound generation and ultrasonic holography for spatial control of the generated ultrasonic pulse is presented. Ultrasound is produced by absorption of laser pulses at an absorbing layer in a water tank via the optoacoustic effect. In order to produce a defined ultrasonic frequency in the MHz range, the laser pulses are harmonically time-modulated using an aco...

Interference patterns of scattering light induced by orientational fluctuations in an electric-field-biased nematic liquid-crystal film.

A new light-scattering phenomenon from a planar aligned nematic liquid-crystal film is observed and studied. This new phenomenon exhibits ring patterns in the orthogonal polarization. A simple model based on optical interference has been developed, and its predictions agree well with experimental observation.

Quasi-static electric-field-enhanced diffraction effects in a nematic liquid-crystal film.

A quasi-static electric field can enhance laser-induced diffraction rings from a nematic liquid-crystal film. This phenomenon is shown to be the combined result of the critical behavior of the sample at the Freedericksz transition and the nonlinear coupling of the optical and quasi-static electric fields.

Imaging in diffuse media with pulsed-ultrasound-modulated light and the photorefractive effect.

Acousto-optic imaging in diffuse media is a dual wave-sensing technique in which an acoustic field interacts with multiply scattered laser light. The acoustic field causes a phase modulation in the optical field emanating from the interaction region, and this phase-modulated optical field carries with it information about the local optomechanical properties of the media. We report on the use of...
